Enterprize Schools’ Program

The Enterprize Ship Trust provides a range of programs for primary and secondary school groups. The Enterprize is a
superbly crafted timber replica of the ship that brought the first European settlers to Melbourne in 1835. It offers students
the experience of sailing on an 1800s sailing vessel in 21st Century comfort and safety.

The activity programs can be aligned with VELS guidelines to suit your needs. We have standard programs which have
been regularly used with other school groups, or we can consult with you to produce a program that is tailored to your
specific requirements in a range of subjects including history and science and which can be adapted for all levels from
Primary through to Year 12.

There should also be an excellent education package in your school library under reference number 994.51 INV, called
Investigating Melbourne provided by the Melbourne Foundation Day Committee in 2002 which includes a major section
on the Enterprize and its part in the founding of Melbourne.

Some of the programs that have been regularly used by schools include:

Ship Tours

This is a non sailing program where students come on board the ship whilst it is berthed at the jetty. Crew are available to explain the various parts of the ship and to demonstrate how the sails are raised and the lines coiled and made up and to answer questions about the history of the ship. A short history presentation may be possible depending on the total numbers.

Numbers: Maximum of 150 children over one hour

Cost: $2 per student with a minimum of $100.

Alternate Sail/History Lesson

This is one of our most popular programs where schools can bring up to 80 students with the groups split into two. Whilst one group goes on the ship for a one hour sail, the other group comes to our training room for a discussion on the history of the founding of Melbourne. The groups then alternate. During the sailing the students are encouraged to help the crew hoist and set the sails and to steer the ship.

Numbers: Generally 80 students noting that the maximum group on the ship, including teachers, is 45.

Note: Some schools have brought 120 students with the third group exploring the Williamstown heritage area and the
three groups rotating the activities over a 3 hour period.

Cost: $850 for a two hour program.

Teachers Information Day

Enterprize is hosting a teachers' information day on Thursday the 18th of March 2010 time and venue to be announced. Includes a complimentary one-hour sail and all teachers are invited. Other Programs
Can be arranged to suit your specific needs. These can include:

Team building
For smaller groups, up to 15 students, where the focus is primarily on working together and actively helping to sail the
ship. These trips would normally be of a 3 to 4 hour duration.

Duke of Edinburgh skills development
These trips have been tailored to fit the schools’ needs with the most popular being a 3 day/2 night sail around the
bay for a maximum of 10(students & teachers). By the third day the students have been trained to handle most
aspects of sailing the ship including the basics of navigation and are equipped to sail the ship, under crew supervision,
between ports.

Booking
When the program and sailing times have been agreed you will be sent a booking form and sailing conditions.
The booking will be confirmed once we have received the deposit and acknowledgement of the booking details and sailing conditions.
